The government extended the deadline for the third time, allowing individuals on Wednesday to file income tax returns for fiscal year 2019-20 by January 10.
The deadline for companies and individuals who also have to have their accounts checked has been extended by 15 days to February 15, the Treasury Department said in a statement.
The due dates for filing income tax returns (ITR) by individuals and companies were December 31, 2020 and January 31, 2021, respectively.
By December 28, over 4.54 crore ITRs had been submitted for the 2019-20 financial year (2020-21 assessment year). In the same period last year, 4.77 crore income tax returns were filed.
At the end of the deadline for filing ITRs without payment of late fees for fiscal year 2018-19 (assessment year 2019-20), over 5.65 crore declarations had been submitted by taxpayers.
The Income Tax Department tweeted that the extension had come in various time frames amid the ongoing challenges for taxpayers to comply with legal requirements due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In addition, the deadline for filing the declaration under the Vivad Se Vishwas direct tax dispute settlement system has been extended by one month to January 31.
The deadline for filing the GST annual return for the 2019-20 financial year has been extended by two months to February 28, 2021.
