Kerala Assembly passes resolution urging Centre to scrap farm laws

Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the resolution in the House, which held a special session to discuss the laws.

The Kerala Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday calling on the BJP-led government at the center the controversial farm laws. The resolution was passed unanimously by the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).

The only BJP member O. Rajagopal spoke of his reservations about points in the resolution, however did not speak out against it in the vote. Mr Rajagopal said he abstained because he supported the state government’s resolution.

Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the resolution in the House, which held a special session to discuss the laws. The laws would weaken farmers’ bargaining power over the combined strength of businesses, the resolution said.

“The laws lack provisions to protect farmers. In a scenario where the government pulls out of procurement, it will jeopardize food distribution and food security and lead to an increase in hoarding and black markets, ”the resolution said.

“In addition, agriculture is a state issue in the seventh constitutional plan. For reasons which seriously affect the states, the draft laws should have been discussed in a meeting of the intergovernmental council. It is serious business that the bills were passed in a hurry without forwarding them to Parliament’s Standing Committee, ”the resolution said.

The special session was originally scheduled for December 23, but was postponed after Governor Arif Mohammed Khan rejected the cabinet’s recommendation.
