In order to raise awareness for the conservation of Korattur Lake, the Korattur Aeri Padukappu Makkal Iyakam (KAPMI), a citizens’ movement, organized various events on Saturday.
Students, volunteers and activists took part in the 4km run that started from the DTP colony and ended on Perumal Koil Street. Several events were organized in collaboration with the Alternative Media Center, a non-governmental organization dedicated to reviving folk art.
KAPMI’s Secretary S. Sekaran said, “We are organizing the Eri Pongal Festival for the second year running on Sanjeevi Garden Street. This is intended to help increase the community’s commitment to the conservation of the water body. “
Officials from various government agencies attended the event, and the prizes were given to the winners of various competitions held as part of the festival.
Members of the KAPMI noted that the restoration of Lake Korattur, one of the main sources of groundwater recharge, is still a long way off. In addition to the illegal release of untreated wastewater in the DTP colony, encroachments on the sea area were a recurring phenomenon.
Measures must be taken to prevent stray cattle from entering the Seebund and damaging the walkers’ path. So far, only a small part of the trail has been fenced in, said Mr Sekaran.
Members also called for the weir to be raised in height to store additional water and for the water body to be desludged.
