The completed project will help clear traffic jams on Kachirapalayam Road
A proposal to develop an Outer Ring Road (ORR) to relieve traffic in the city of Kallakurichi is becoming increasingly important.
The detailed project report (FREP) for one of the most important initiatives of the district administration is nearing completion.
“The DVR prepared by the State Highways Department is in the final stages. The project envisages widening and correcting existing routes. The department has proposed three routes, and the possible route is being selected for the ORR project, ”said district collector Kiran Gurrala The Hindu.
“The plan is still in the early stages and a feasibility study is being carried out. The final cost of the project has yet to be determined. Once it is ready, it will be forwarded to the state government for sanctioning funds including the land acquisition process, ”Gurrala said.
The need for an ORR is a long-standing requirement of the city. The existing roads leading to Kallakurichi City are heavily congested due to traffic jams during rush hour. Most days, traffic is blocked on Kachirapalayam Road and Sankarapuram Main Road. Since Kallakurichi is spun off as a new district from the combined district of Villupuram, infrastructure development is also increasing. The proposed ORR aims to remove traffic jams in the city.
A Highways Department official said three alignments had been prepared. One of the alignments was proposed by the Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital in Siruvangur. The alignment committee has requested some changes and a revised alignment is being prepared. It will be filed in the next 10 days, the official added.
The completed project would be of great help in managing traffic congestion on Kachirapalayam Road as it would act as a link between Veeracholapuram on the Ulundurpet-Salem motorway and Siruvangur, the official said.
