The Minister for Cooperation, Sellur K. Raju, opened the boat service here in Mariamman Teppakulam on Wednesday.
The collector T. Anbalagan and the commissioner of Madurai Corporation, S. Visakan, were present.
After the inauguration, the minister addressed the media and said the water-filled Mariamman Teppakulam had become the favorite entertainment spot for the city’s residents. You would enjoy the boat service now introduced in the temple tank.
One steamboat was currently operational and three more would be procured soon. Seven passengers could travel in each boat and the fare was £ 20 per person. The boat service is allowed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mariamman Teppakulam was built in 1645 by King Thirumalai Nayak. Under the AV bridge as part of the Smart Cities Mission, two dams were built over the Vaigai to store water and divert it to the Teppakulam via the Panaiyur Canal, Raju said.
“The corporation’s employees de-wilted the Panaiyur Canal and cleared the garbage to ensure free flow of water to the tank,” he added.
Various measures have been taken in Mariamman Teppakulam to ensure the safety of residents. “Gates were built in all four directions of the tank to restrict access to the tank Padithurais“said the minister.
The company also formulated a plan for permanent storage of water in the tank, he added.
