Cyclone Burevi Updates: Landfall in Sri Lanka soon, PM Modi speaks to Kerala, TN CMs

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a cyclone storm and has been named Cyclone Burevi. IMD has announced that Cyclone Burevi will cross the Sri Lankan coast on Thursday evening and southern Tamil Nadu on Friday morning.

Cyclone Burevi will land on the Sri Lankan coast near Trincomalee on Thursday evening and emerge on the Gulf of Mannar on Friday morning. The cyclone storm will then move towards Tamil Nadu and cross the state between Kanniyakumari and Pamban.

Updates to Cyclone Burevi:

8.10 p.m .: Cyclone Burevi is now 300 km from Tamil Nadus Pamban.

7:35 p.m .: Cyclone storm Burevi will land near Trincomalee in Sri Lanka for the first time in the next few hours. It is expected to continue moving in a west-southwest direction and to appear in the Gulf of Mannar tomorrow: IMD

7.20 p.m .: PM Modi speaks to Tamil Nadu, Kerala CMs, and assures the support of the center.

6:50 p.m .: Heavy rains and winds predicted for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam from December 3rd to 5th.

6:35 p.m .: Kerala CM outlines plan to combat cyclone Burevi

– 697 people from 175 families were resettled in 13 camps. 2,489 camps have been identified to move people if necessary.

– A control room with the hotline number 1077 has been opened

– 8 NDRF teams on site.

– The fishermen did not go to sea until December 5th

– Air Force, Navy based in Coimbatore.

– The water levels in Neyyar, Kallada and Kakki must be lowered.

6.15 p.m.:: 360 people from Palam near Tamil Nadu Dhanushkodi (210 men, 120 women, 30 children) moved to the Narayanpur animal shelter in Thangachimadam.

6.10 p.m .: Discussed cyclone agreements with PM Modi, says Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

5.45 p.m .: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is issuing an alarm for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha for December 3rd in the face of cyclone Burevi.

5:20 pm: NDMA releases cyclones do’s and don’ts for fishermen.

5.10 p.m .: Cyclone Burevi crosses the Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanniyakumari on December 3 at night and on December 4 in the early morning as a cyclone storm, IMD says.

9.55 a.m .: Kerala’s Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said his government was ready to face the impending crisis. “All government departments have been instructed to prepare on a war basis. We will learn more about the effects of the cyclone in the coming hours. We are preparing for any kind of situation,” said Vijayan.

9.38 a.m .: IMD issued Red Alert Thursday in 4 districts of Kerala. In the districts of Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, extremely heavy rainfall is expected on Thursday. An orange alarm has been triggered in the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki, where very heavy rainfall is expected. On Wednesday and Friday, occasional heavy to very heavy rains are expected in these areas.

9.30 a.m .: According to IMD, cyclone storm Burevi is located over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and has moved from west to northwest at a speed of 12 km / h for the past six hours. It was in the middle on Wednesday morning at 2:30 a.m., about 300 km east of Trincomalee (Sri) Lanka), 530 km east-southeast of Pamban (India) and 700 km almost east of Kanniyakumari.

9.25 a.m .: Kerala and Tamil Nadu are on high alert after IMD warned of cyclone Burevi over the southwestern Bay of Bengal. IMD has issued the yellow alert along the south coast of both states.

9.15 a.m .: In anticipation of the impending cyclone storm, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed in Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu and Alappuzha in Kerala.

Cyclone Burevi is expected to cause heavy to very heavy rain in some places in southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala and extremely heavy showers in isolated places on Thursday.

Similar spells were also to be expected the day before and after in parts of the two states, including Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram.

Cyclone Burevi comes barely a week after Cyclone Nivar, which hit Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for two days with heavy rains and strong winds. Last week, the very severe cyclone storm Nivar hit Tamil Nadu. While there were no reports of deaths, approximately 2.5 lakh were kept in state cyclone shelters as part of security measures.

The Nivar cyclone caused significant crop damage on over 6.59 hectares in various districts of Andhra Pradesh.
