City police extend ‘Marpu’ to misguided youth

Drug addicts who indulge in anti-social activities are advised: Police Commissioner

The city police have expanded their recently launched “Marpu” program to include youth who become addicted to drugs and other activities such as cycling. It will basically be a counseling center.

The program was originally started to give hooligans who are listed at various police stations the opportunity to reform themselves.

In view of the recent trend of young people becoming addicted to different types of drugs and some indulging in anti-social activities, Police Commissioner Manish Kumar Sinha decided to extend the program to them.

It was found that in the city FIRs are being registered against some youths for breaking the law. Cases later hinder their careers aside from disrupting their lives, Sinha said.

According to him, drug use and cycling or riding bicycles at very high speed are some of the problem areas as they sometimes lead to fatal accidents.

In order to dissuade the youth from such activities and give them the opportunity to join the mainstream, the scope of ‘Marpu’ has been expanded.

The counseling center consists of one officer from the social, police and medical and health departments.

The officers are assisted by a counselor or psychologist.

The committee will sit in room 15 in the Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium on Mondays starting February 1st from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
