NCW Asks Maharashtra DGP to Report on Woman Death in Pune; Sanjay Rathod goes without contact with the outside world
Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said Saturday that an investigation into allegations against forest minister and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Rathod regarding the death of a woman in Pune would be ongoing and anyone found guilty would not be spared.
“We have heard of allegations from various areas. We have taken note of everything and given instructions for an investigation into the matter. Attempts to destroy careers of individuals undertaken in some previous cases are not allowed in this case, however, “Thackeray said, adding that legal action would be taken.
Mr Thackeray’s statement comes against the background of the National Commission for Women (NCW), which is requesting a report from the Director General of the Maharashtra Police (DGP) on the death of the 23-year-old woman. The NCW challenged the DGP a day after the letter from former chairman of CM and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis questioned the delay in filing an FIR in the woman’s alleged suicide. The woman, who was from Parli, Beed District, Marathwada Region, died after falling from the balcony of an apartment in the Hadapsar area of Pune.
In the meantime, Mr Rathod had been out of contact with the outside world for a week and could not be reached for comment despite several attempts. According to sources within the Sena, the party has asked him not to make a statement yet.
The BJP has linked the woman’s death to Mr Rathod and has requested his arrest.
Chitra Wagh, the official of the BJP women’s wing, has filed for an FIR against the minister, while former party member Kirit Somaiya has called for his immediate arrest.
In his letter to the DGP, Mr Fadnavis had spoken about audio clips in circulation on social media in which the minister was allegedly mentioned together with the woman.
